Over 1-km Jamuna dam washed away
Sirajganj Water Development Board (WDB) constructed a spar in Shovagacha-Baoikhola area at a cost of Tk 15 core last year but the mighty Jamuna washed away about half of it last year.
The rest of the spur is under threat as one kilometer area of the embankment has been washed away.
In the face of erosion, Tarakhandi High School, Bangla Bazar Girls High School, Khukshia High School and Khukshia Government Primary School, Shovagacha Primary School have been shifted.
At leas 100 families have become homeless as their homesteads were devoured by the river. Many people have taken shelter on the embankment of Jamuna.
Meanwhile, WDB sources said they have started implementing 11 projects involving Tk 11 crore 97 lakh to protect the embankment at different places including that in Shovagacha.
