Wild elephants kill one, injure 10 in Rangamati
The dead was identified as Abdul Jalil alias Jalil Majhi, 55.
Of the injured, Nobab Ali, 56, Muksed Khan, 52, Monsur Ahmed, 55 and Abdul Hakim, 30 were admitted to the upazila health complex.
Sources said, the herd of at least 13 elephants made a sudden attack. The unprepared villagers ran for life. At one stage, one of the elephants nabbed Jalil by its trunk and threw him on the earth, the sources said. The herd damaged houses and crops on fields.
On May 28, an woman identified as Sajeda Begum was killed by wild elephants at Pathorbonpara village. Ten people were also injured in the attack.
Fearing further attack, about 2000 people of nearby Islampur, Pathorbonpara, Baharmurapara and Shafipur villages left homes and took shelter in schools and madrassahs.
Rajostholi Upazila Nirbahee Officer (UNO) Jahurul Haque, police officials and upzila BNP president Md. Selim visited the spot.
Wild elephants are attacking villages due to massive deforestation and fresh human settlements, which destroying wildlife sanctuaries, said a forest official.
