Staff Correspondent, Sylhet
Defalcation of over Tk 30 lakh from ticket sale proceeds has been detected at Sylhet railway station.

The amount may go up when the on-going probe will be completed in a few days, sources said.

Two teams, one comprising Divisional Assistant Chief Traffic Manager Abdur Rab Hawlader and Additional Finance Advisor and Principal Accounts Officer Goura Chandra Roy and the other headed by Divisional Commercial Officer Md Miazan Kabir are probing the irregularities for the last seven days.

The investigation started following filing of a general diary on June 21 and a case on June 24 with Sylhet Railway Police against booking in-charge Shahjahan Ali after he was missing since June 15.

Meantime, Station Master Bimal Kanti Biswas and Shajahan Ali have been put under suspension, the sources said.

Shahjahan Ali was entrusted to deposit sale proceeds of tickets with Agrani Bank, Station Road branch.

On an average, tickets worth Tk four lakh are sold at the station every day. Shahjahan Ali used to deposit around Tk three lakh. He prepared fake bank receipts for depositing the money, the sources said.

As he was not attending office since 15 June, the railway station authorities apprehended something wrong and filed a GD, followed by a case.

Hailing from Pabna, Class III employee Shahjahan Ali had been posted at Sylhet railway station since 1976. He owns two shops in the city's posh Al-Hamra shopping complex, two Pajero jeeps and a Leguna autotempo, officials at the railway station said.

Shahjahan also owns a house in Kuril area in Dhaka city, they said.
