AL faction in Rangpur threatens hartal

Our Correspondent, Rangpur

A faction of the district Awami League (AL) staged demonstrations in the town on Thursday demanding arrest of rival faction leader Abul Kalam Azad.

The demonstrators threatened to enforce a half- day hartal (strike) in the town on Monday if Azad is not arrested.

Sharf Uddin Ahmed Jhantoo, a former lawmaker from Jatiya Party, who joined AL ahead of the last parliamentary polls, led the demonstration. In his speech he accused Abul Kalam Azad of the bomb attack on his residence on Tuesday night. The bomb was hurled to kill him, he alleged.

The demonstrators held two rallies at Kutchery bazaar and Jahaz company square.

Abul Kalam Azad, also a new entrant in AL, is a transport leader. None of the district AL leaders was available yesterday for comment.
