Flood worsens again in Nilphamari

The flood situation in Nilphamari worsened again yesterday due to rain and onrush of water through the Teesta and its tributaries.

In Gaibandha, marooned people in remote charlands are facing crisis of food and drinking water.

Our Nilphamari correspondent reported that the Indo-Bangladesh joint dam at Kaligang in Dimla upazila is under serious threat.

Unofficial sources said a cross-dam developed breaches at Mekhligang and Vaora in Jalpaiguri in India, which may create a catastrophic situation in downstream areas in Bangladesh. If the cross-dam breaches in India, the dam in Kaliganj will be seriously damaged, creating a deluge, they said.

Diarrhoea is spreading in the flood-affected areas, they said. Sixty-four medical teams of the district health department are working to combat the disease.

Our Gaibandha Correspondent reported that no government effort was made to rescue the marooned people from remote charlands of Teesta and Brahmaputra, who are facing acute crisis of food and drinking water.

About 5,000 people are mar-ooned in charlands in Sunderganj upazila alone, sources said.

Three local NGOs are rescuing the marooned people from charlands in Gaibandha Sadar, Fulchari and Shaghata upazilas.

Nearly 300 feet of the Teesta embankment has been washed away at Mirganj by the surging water. A sluice gate there is also threatened.

Onrush of water from Karotoa river is threatening Katakahli bridge and Deantola railway bridge in Gobindaganj upazila.

Sunderganj Upazila TNO said about 400 families have been rendered homeless by river erosion in Ujanbochagari union.
