Life terms for abduction, rape
Our Barisal Correspondent reported that Nural Huq, judge of the Special Tribunal for Prevention of Women and Children Repression on Monday sentenced Salahuddin Russell to life imprisonment in absentia for kidnapping his four-year-old cousin Fahim for ransom.
Russel had demanded Tk 2000 from his shopkeeper uncle Amir Hossain.
Being refused, Russel, with his friends Razib and Masud kidnapped Fahim in June 2000 and demanded Tk 50,000 ransom.
Amir Hossain lodged an abduction case against the three with Barisal Kotwali police on July 1, 2000. Fahim was rescued from Razib's house in Mehendiganj on July 5.
The judge also fined Russel Tk 10,000, in default, to suffer imprisonment for six months more.
Razib was acquitted because of lack of evidence.
A BSS report from Rajshahi said Special Tribunal Judge Nurun Nahar gave Entaz Ali life term for raping the wife of his brother-in-law at his house at Birhasthail Dangipara village under Shah Mukhdum police station in the city on the night of October 9, 1997.
The court recorded depositions of 25 prosecution witnesses during the trial.
