Massive erosion as floodwater recedes
Our Correspondent reported from Gaibandha that a spar in the Rangpur-Bogra highway protection embankment at Hawyakhana is now threatened with erosion as the Karotoa river is falling.
The Roads and Highway Department is dumping sandbags to protect the dam. Road communication will be affected if the spar collapses, they said.
Local people alleged that the spar is threatened because of untimely maintenance work and use of substandard building materials.
Railway sources said transshipment of goods wagon between Balashi and Bahadurabad ghat is yet to start as the marine yard is still under water.
About 300 families became homeless in the last two days due to erosion by the Teesta and Brahmaputra rivers, sources said.
Our Sirajganj correspondent reported that the flood situation slightly improved in the district in the last 24 hours.
The Jamuna is now flowing below the danger mark but erosion has taken a serious turn. The Korota, Boral, Gumani, Fulzore and Ichamoti rivers also fell slightly.
At least 1000 homesteads were eroded by the Jamuna in the last two days in five upazilas. The worst affected upazilas are Belkuchi and Chowhali, where the river devoured over 400, official sources said.
Diarrhea claimed one baby in Kazipur upazila yesterday. The civil surgeon's office said 140 people have been attacked with the disease in the district.
