Forest guard on the shore informed police that a mechanised boat was moving suspiciously and advancing towards the vessel.

As a police team from Char Zahiruddin Inspection Post led by SI Jasimuddin chased the boat, the pirates fired shots at them. After about one and a half hours' exchange of fire, the pirates retreated and tried to flee throwing their firearms into the river. Police caught six of the fleeing pirates.

They are Hassan Faruk, Abul Kasem, Abdur Rahim, Harunur Rashid, Nur Nabi and Emmdad, all from Ramgati in Laxmipur district. Two others dived into the river.

Police also rescued Ruhul Amin and Moslemuddin, the two fishermen on board the boat which was hijacked by the pirates for robbery.
