Life to halt for half an hour
Even students and teachers will leave classes.
People of all ages and walks of life will remain on streets for half an hour, forming scores of human chains in the divisional city.
This unique programme will be observed to press construction of the proposed Padma Bridge at Mawa.
This was decided at a meeting of leaders of all political parties and representative of professional groups, held here on Friday. The meeting was organised by the newly formed 'Committee for Padma Bridge at Mawa'.
The meeting, held at Barisal Muktijoddha Sangshad office, was presided over by Golam Mawla, convenor of the committee.
It was addressed by, among others, Khan Altaf Hossain of Awami League, Asaduzzaman Khasru of BNP, Md. Mahbubur RahmanTitu of BNP's student wing Jubo Dal, Maniruzzaaman Faruk of Bangladesh Jatiya Party (BJP), Altaf Vatti of Jatiya Party (JP), Md Tipu of 11- Party Alliance, Hiron Das Mithu of Gano Forum, Taufiq Maruf of Barisal Press Club, Nripendra Baroi of College University Teachers Association, advocate Nazrul Islam Rajon of Barisal Bar Association, Nurul Alam Farid of Muktijoddha Sangshad, Yusuf Ali Montu of Transport Workers Federation, Sheik Abdur Rahim of Launch Owners Association, Golam Salek of Bus Owners Association , Saifur Rahman Miron of Alliance of Cultural Organizations, Anisur Rahman Swapan and Shawkat Milton of Barisal Reporters Unity,
The meeting decided that tougher programmes will be announced in cooperation with political parties and professional groups in south and southwestern districts if the proposed bridge is not constructed at Mawa.
Such meetings will also be held in other districts and in Dhaka city in support of the demand, those who attended Friday's meeting said.
