One to die, 5 get life for killing a couple in Barisal

Wahidul Islam Babul was given death sentence while Harun Talukdar, Jasimuddin, Mujibur Rahman Talukdar, Hasan Sikder and Wahab Sikder got life imprisonment.

M Abdul Motin, judge of the tribunal, acquitted nine others as charges brought against them were not proved.

According to prosecution, the convicts slaughtered rickshawpuller M Shahabuddin, 35, and his wife Rashida Begum, 28, at Dekhai village in Sadar upazila, Patuakhali on the night of August 7, 1997 following a land dispute.

A case was filed against 15 people on the following day. Police pressed charges against the accused on September 27, 1999.
