The Local Government Engineering Department (LGED) contractors could not drop their tender schedules on the last date of dropping tenders on Wednesday.

Rupsha upazila BNP Organising Secretary Enamul Kabir and the district Chhatra Dal President Abu Hossain Babu prevented them from dropping the tender schedules.

The LGED invited tenders for road development works at an estimated cost of Tk 33 lakh under the Rural Infrastructure Development Project.

Sources in the LGED told this correspondent that a total of 16 schedules were sold. But only four schedules were dropped.

Chhatra Dal President Abu Hossain Babu dropped his tender schedule in favour of his firm Tanni Enterprise.

BNP Leader Enamul Kabir got the work order for construction of a road from Sherpur Bazar to Anandanagar ferryghat at a cost of Tk 24 lakh. Chhatra Dal leader Abu Hossain got work order for brick soling work of the road at a cost of Tk 9 lakh.

Iqbal Hossain, a first class LGED contractor told this correspondent that BNP leader Enamul Kabir and Chhatra Dal leader Abu Hossain were involved in tender manipulation in the LGED and the Roads and Highways (RHD) offices. They forced contractors not to drop tender schedule for any road development work in Rupsha upazila. The two leaders use their party cadres and outlaws to snatch tenders and give death threats.

On contact, both of them refuted the allegations. "We do not influence any LGED and RHD official to accept our tender schedule nor do we threaten any contractor for negotiation, they said.
