Sugar mill lay off decision

A protest rally was held at the mill gate during the hartal hour. Speakers at the meeting said the mill earned profit during 14 crushing seasons. It incurred losses at times due to inefficiency and corruption of the mill authorities. Over 1120 people working at the mill and several thousand sugarcane growers will be affected if the mill is laid-off, they said.

Presided over by Abdul Matin, president of union, the rally was addressed by, among others, Tabibur Rahman, Mohammed Ali, Badiuzzaman Dulu, Abdus Salam, Azizur Rahman, local Awami League leader Altaf Hossain and BNP leader Mohiuddin Mondal.
