'Enact tougher law to stop woman trafficking'
Only tougher laws and punishment to traffickers can check this as the causes for trafficking like poverty, illiteracy and unemployment can not be removed overnight, they said. They also stressed the need for legal protection of the victims.
District officials took part at the workshop, organised jointly by the Costal Development Network (CDN) and Action Against Trafficking and Sexual Exploitation of Children (ATSEK). It was held at the conference room of the Deputy Commissioner.
Speaking as chief guest, DC A Y M Ekramul Haq said, powerful networks of traffickers are active in neighbouring countries. Only strict laws and punishment to traffickers can check this. He lauded the role of media in this regard.
Principal Asit Majumdar stressed on women's empowerment to reduce trafficking.
Additional Deputy Commissioner (ADC) said, the NGOs and the media can create mass awareness, which will reduce this. Former commerce secretary and Project Director of ATSEK explained his organisation's activities to check women trafficking.
Abdus Sabur, CDN member secretary, delivered the address of welcome at the workshop, also addressed by Meherul Alam, Asit Shuvra, Subhas Chowdhury and Dilip Kumar Dev.
