'Boycott those who do not attend parliament'

He alleged that Awami League lawmakers are not attending parliament sessions only to make it ineffective and thwart BNP's efforts to consolidate democracy in the country.

They are doing this because they do not believe in democracy. In the past, they had established one party rule, closed all the newspapers and destroyed all democratic institutions. It is Ziaur Rahman who reestablished multi-party democracy and press freedom in the country, he said.

He was handing over stipends to meritorious students, given by the Ayub Hossain Foundation, at a simple function held at Noapara Public Library auditorium on Monday.

The education minister said people voted Awami League leaders to discuss their problems in parliament and to solve those. But they are betraying with the people by not going to parliament.

The Awami League is also doing anarchy in the country by calling frequent hartals and disrupting development activities.

He called upon the people to resist such "destructive" activities.

He also lauded the role of Ayub Hossain Foundation in promoting education and said the affluent should come forward generously to help the under-privileged.

Omar Sadat, chairman of the foundation, presided over the function, also addressed by, among others Nural Haq, Motiar Rahman, Alauddin, Prof Abdul Karim, Abdul Keder and Md Badrul Alam.
