MPs violate UP manual, workshop told
This affects local development, speakers alleged at a workshop on 'Union Parishad Manual and Act Affairs", held here on Saturday.
Uttaran, a local NGO, organised the workshop with assistance from USAID-funded Local Government Initiative (LGI).
Journalists, local government representatives, civil society leaders including teachers attended the workshop.
Local body leaders alleged that MPs are often seen more interested in matters relating to wheat distribution under VGF cards, obviously to benefit party men.
"If 300 VGF cards are allotted for an area, over 150 go to ruing party men", one speaker said.
The MPs never accept development plans prepared by local body leaders, who know about local problems, they said.
They urged the government to strengthen local governments and to allow them work independently.
The speakers included Anjana Das, Selim Moral Principal Asit Kumar Majumdar, principal Yunus Ali, Subhash Chowdhry, Kalyan Bannerjee and Anisur Rahim.
