The ill-fated child is Riad Mahmud, son of Abul Basar who was admitted to the district general hospital in a critical condition.

Two criminals named Abdul Hye, 25, and Abul Kashem, 45, abducted him from his mother's lap in the morning on the fateful day and left the child at midnight with severe acid injuries on the courtyard of their house, police and relatives told this correspondent.

His mother Fatema Siddiqa disclosed that the incident occurred as a sequel to enmity. The child's uncle, Morshed Alam filed a case with Sonaimuri thana accusing eight persons including the two abductors on charge of demanding extortion from them. The alleged extortionists were threatening them for a long time to withdraw the case. As they did not withdraw the case the culprits took revenge in such an inhuman manner, she said.
