Dacoits loot jewellery market in Uzirpur

Armed daoits numbering around 40 in a two-hour heist looted a jewellery market at Shikarpur Bandar in Uzirpur upazila in the district in the early hours of Wednesday.

They beat and tied up four employees who were sleeping inside the shops and decamped with jewellery worth over Tk 20 lakh from five shops, the shop owners said.

Divided into two groups, the robbers swooped on the market at about 3 am. One group kept guard and the other group looted the shops.

The looted shops are Mukta Jewellers, Shanta Jewellers, Mala Jewellers, Moni Jewellers and Jomaddar Jewellers.

They also broke open iron safe at all the five shops and took away two kilograms of gold and Tk three lakh.

Ranjan Bakshi, owner of Moni Jewellers, said the dacoits looted only the jewellery shops.

Police visited the spot yesterday morning. None could be arrested till filing of the report yesterday afternoon.

Uzirpur thana Officer-in-Charge Md Yousuf however described the incident as a theft and said thieves too away jewellery from three shops by breaking open their shutters.

Preparations are on to file a case, he said.
