Vow to curb drug menace

Over 1,500 people of all walks of life including teachers, lawyers, religious leaders, students, youths, professionals, political leaders and elected representatives at a meeting here on Thursday vowed to curb the menace of drug abuse and drug peddling from the society once for all.

Newly-appointed superintendent of police (SP), Satkhira Muhammad Abdur Rahim who was present as chief guest expressed his solidarity with the people.

Polashpole Social Development and Polashpole Anti-drug Committee jointly organised the meeting at Khan Community Centre here which was presided over by Satkhira Chamber of Commerce and Industries president M A Jalil. Satkhira Pourasabha chairman Sheikh Ashraful Haq was present as special guest.

Among others, the ASP of Sadar Circle Zillur Rahman, Sadar thana OC Abdul Kader Beg, Anti-drug Committee president Emamul Islam Sharif, Principal Ali Ahmed, former Union Parishad (UP) chairman SM Nurul Alam and Maulana Aminul Islam addressed the meeting.

While addressing the SP declared amid cheers stern action would be taken against him if any member of the law enforcing agency is found to help or shelter drug peddlers. He urged the people to identify and nab corrupt policemen.

Other speakers expressed their great concern over the increasing trend of drug addiction, especially among the youths. They demanded immediate haltage of the harmful menace.
