The Power Development Board (PDB) yesterday snapped power supply to the DPHE (Department of Public Health and Engineering), BTTB (Bangladesh Telegraph and Telephone Board) and Bandarban Pourashova as Tk 2. 46 crore bills are unrealised from them.

This has disrupted water supply and telecommunication in the town.

PDB sources said they had served final notices on the three government organisations for payment of arrears bills by May 15 and warned that supply lines would be snapped for non-compliance.

But they did not respond.

PDE Executive Engineer Sheikh Md Alauddin told this correspondent, "There is no alternative. We were ordered by our higher authorities (to snap power lines).

PDB source said Tk 1 crore 66 lakh was outstanding with DPHE, Tk 61 lakh with BTTB and Tk 19 lakh with the Pourashova.

When contacted, Bandarban Hill District Council (BHDC) Chairman Ma Mya Ching said she has taken an initiative to find a solution in view of the people's sufferings caused by snapping the power supply.

"I talked with higher officials concerned in the ministries", she said.
