12 hurt in grenade attack in Chuadanga

At least 12 people including a municipal commissioner were injured when a grenade was hurled at an arbitration meeting at Hat Boalia bus stand at Alamdanga on Thursday.

Chuadanga police said miscreants threw a grenade when Chaudanga BNP vice-president and Alamdanga Municipal Chairman Mir Mohiuddin along with some commissioners were holding a meeting to arbitrate a complaint of toll collection, lodged by shopkeeper Mannan against some local hoodlums.

Municipal Commissioner Ali Ajgar Sachhu, Mannan and two others --Faruk and Rubel-- were admitted to Kushtia General Hospital with critical injuries while others were given first aid.

Police recovered splinters of the exploded grenade from the spot. It was a powerful grenade, they told newsmen later. A case was filed with Alamdanga police.

In another incident in the early hours of Thursday, two BDR personnel were injured when smugglers threw bombs on a BDR team when they were patrolling Tetulbaria Khasmahal border area in Gangni upazila in Meheprur district.

The injured BDR personnel-- Habildar Abul Kaesm and Jahangir Hossain--have been admitted to the same hospital. Patrolling has been intensified after the incident, BDR sources said.
