'Don't send children to tobacco factories'

BTUK (Bangladesh Trade Union Kendra), an organisation working to create awareness among tobacco workers about their rights, organised the workshop recently with assistance from ILO (International Labour Organisation) and IPEC (International Programme for Elimination of Child Labour).

About 80 labour leaders of eight tobacco factories in Daulatpur and the adjoining tobacco processing area attended the workshop.

According to a survey of BTUK, at least 25,000 workers and 5,000 children are working in eight big tobacco factories in Kushtia.

ILO representative Pracha Basu Prashad was present as chief guest, while it was addressed, among others, by BTUK general secretary Dr Wazedul Haq, Rafiqul Islam, Mahabbubur Rahman and Jasim Uddin.

Daulatpur upazila nirbahi officer (UNO) AKM Samsul Arefin opened the workshop.
