"We gathered information regarding criminals, type of common crimes and the crime zones in Rajshahi division before starting our operation", Rab Rajshahi Commanding Officer Lt Col Faruk Hossain told The Daily Star.

Rab opened its office in Rajshahi in April.

Tipped off, Rab members in their first operation raided Khulipara area in the town in the early hours of Tuesday and recovered an abandoned local made revolver.

Rab is working with a true intention to eliminate crimes from the areas, he said and sought people's whole hearted cooperation in this regard.

"People should come up with appropriate information regarding criminals without any fear", Hossain said adding that they are now ready to launch any major operation.

"We have identified drug peddling as most common crime that has already reached in an alarming state as, in many cases, some corrupt law enforcers are seen sheltering the criminals", he said.

However, drug peddlers at Panchabati areas assaulted two Rab members in the first week of this month.

Rab officials explained the incident as a case of 'misunderstanding with local people'. He said Rab members had gone there to gather information on drug trade.
