98 acid victims in Barisal in five years

Ninety-eight persons were burnt by acid in last five years in Barisal division.

Refusal of love or marriage proposal, land related dispute and dowry were the main causes of acid attacks. Most of the victims were aged between 19 years and 34 years.

Acid Survivors' Foundation revealed it after conducting a survey. Love affairs were not only the main cause of the acid crime. In the survey, 300 acid victims were examined. Of them 91 persons fell victims of acid attack due to refusal of love proposal, while 36 fell victims due to denial of illegal sexual relationship. Sixty-five victims became the target of acid crime due to land dispute, 44 persons were victimised due to dowry and 27 others fell victims due to disputes in married life. Fifteen persons fell victims due to political reasons, while 17 others did not know the real cause of acid attack. Of them five acid victims were under under 18 years of age.

About 160 acid victims were aged between 19 to 34 and 45 years, while eight others were over 55 years of age.

Acid attackers mainly use Sulfuric and Nitric acid which they collected from goldsmiths and open markets.
