Acid victim in Manikganj rehabilitated
The victim is Shukur Ali, 40, son of late Asuruddin of Ghasta village in Sadar upazila. He was rehabilitated by giving ownership of a grocery.
Neighbours Sadek and Khaleque threw acid on him while he was asleep in his house on July 15, 2002. A court sentenced them to life term imprisonment this year.
Poor Shukur Ali has an eight-year-old daughter and a three- year-old son besides his wife. As they were unable to maintain their family, ASF donated Tk 20,000 and requested BRAC to make a grocery for him. Accordingly, BRAC handed down a grocery to the victim.
Among others, BRAC Regional Manager Anwar Hossain, Manikganj Sadar Area Manager M Ashraful Alam, Regional Sector Specialist Meer Mohammad Shahjahan, Staff lawyer Rokonuzzaman, Betila Area Manager M Nasir Uddin and Manikganj Sadar Area Officer of Social Development, Human Rights and Legal Aid M Nazrul Islam were present during the grocery handing over ceremony.
BRAC officials told this correspondent they sent the victim to the Acid Survivors Foundation in Dhaka for treatment and bore the entire treatment expenditure of his treatment amounting to Tk 4,00,000.
