People need work, not relief, says Dr. Kamal
Addressing a public meeting at Achingach Primary School ground, he said people do not want relief, they want work.
But neither the government nor public representatives in the areas take any step to create jobs for them.
The NGOs are simply disbursing loans to the poor and realising those with interest. This is not actually benefiting the poor. The NGOs should train the poor in different vocations so that they can stand on their foot, he said.
The government should come forward with some pragmatic steps to create jobs for the people.
Monga is nothing new in the region. The same situation is prevailing for long but no government came forward with any step to set up industries in the region or creating other job avenues for people, he lamented.
The Constitution guarantees right to food to every citizen, , said Dr. Kamal.
The government's development efforts are seen only on he official media, not on the spot, the internationally reputed jurist said.
He said this is unfortunate that the local lawmaker was absent when people are reeling under abject poverty.
Dr Kamal met grassroots level people in 14 monga affected villages in Kurigram sadar, Rajarhat and Ulipur upazilas.
He was accompanied by former Whip Abdur Rouf, engineer Abul Kalam, advocate Enamul Huq Chowdhury and Harun-ur-Rashid.
