Security ensures good Eid shopping

Presence of RAB and police patrol has created a safe and secure atmospheres in different markets, shopkeepers and shoppers said while talking to this correspondent yesterday.

Markets in areas including Chawkbazar, Girzamahalla, Fazlul Huq Avenue, Sadar Road, Bogura Road, Falpatty and Steamerghat areas remain crowded beyond midnight and people return home safely after shopping.

But prices of sarees and readymade garments are higher this year, both shoppers and shopkeepers said.

The shopkeepers said prices are higher because smuggling of Indian sarees and garments is less.

Sheilh Abdur Rahim, owner of a big cloth store at Chawkbazar, said Indian sharees are scarce this year. So locally made garments have good markets and their prices are reasonable.

Rosy Begum, a customer said, "I paid more for a saree but this is a good trend that our producers are coming up with quality products".

All the shops, markets and streets of commercial areas are decorated with colorful banners and electric lightings.

People from lower income groups are flocking to Mohsin Market, Banga Bazar, hawkers markets and roadside shops.

Rush of people for Eid shopping has created another problem. Traffic jam is a common scene in the city. To ease the situation, some roads have been declared off-limits for rickshaws. Vehicles are not allowed into some approach roads to markets.
