AL leader elected Gangni municipal chairman
Ali, senior vice-president of Meherpur district AL contested the election from jail. He was arrested last month in a case.
Ali got 3700 votes against 2503 polled by his nearest rival Jamaat-e-Islamil leader Rabiul Islam and 2163 by BNP supported candidate Golam Mehedi.
Eight candidates ran in the race.
The post fell vacant following the killing of Amirul Islam on September 27 allegedly by outlaws.
This was second election in Gangni municipality, set up in 2002.
The first election was held on May 13, 2002, in which Independent candidate Amirul Islam won the polls defeating a ruling coalition candidate.
