Tiger scare near Sundarbans
People work outdoors with caution and keep indoors after sunset.
For about a week, a maneater enters villages in Burigoalini Hilo area almost every night. It took away at least two cows, three goats, 10 jackals and some dogs.
At night, villagers beat drums and ring bells to keep away the maneater, some villagers said.
They said, in winter as the rivers shrink, tigers seasily cross those and enter human habitations. The menace has increased as Malancha, Kalir, Krishna, Roymongal, Mamundo, Haldibu-niar, Duner, Papratali, Singhertali and other canals in the coastal areas of the Sundarbans have virtually dried up.
At least 45 people were killed by tigers in the areas in last eight months, they claimed.
Several tigers were killed by villagers 1999 and 2002.
