Ecnec okays upgradation of Barisal BM College into university

A decision to upgrade Barisal Government Brojo Mohan College into a full-fledged university was approved at the Executive Committee of National Economic Council's (ECNEC) meeting on Sunday.

Prime Minister Khaleda Zia presided over the meeting.

The news brought joy for local people. BNP leaders and students brought out victory processions on the day.

Barisal City Corporation Mayor Advocate Majibur Rahman Sarwar MP, also minister of the district led the joyous procession.

The college was established on 50 acres of land on June 14, 1889 by late Aswani Kumar Dutta, a Zamindar (land lord) and prominent Congress leader of undivided Bengal in memory of his father Brojo Mohan Dutta. The college earned popularity as the Oxford of Bengal within a short period of its establishment.

Gyanendranath Chowdhury was the first principal of the college. At present, 20,000 students study in the college.
