The letter received by Mahadev Mondal of Ronjan Nagar village yesterday also threatened him of 'dire consequences' for non-compliance.

Quoting local people police said the letter was kept in a pot in the courtyard.

The letter said, "We want Tk 50,000. Keep the money in the pot at the same place within seven days. Otherwise, you, your son and wife will be killed".

Mahadev Mondal and neighbours showed the latter to local Union Parishad member Anwarul Islam who handed it over to police.

When contacted, Shyamnagar police said, they are investigating the matter and will take necessary action.
