Thousands flee DR Congo fighting

About 80,000 people have been displaced by fighting in the north-east of the Democratic Republic of Congo this year, according to UN officials.

They say nearly half have fled Ituri region in the last three days.

Ituri is highly unstable, despite the presence of UN peacekeepers and a peace agreement designed to end Congo's five-year civil war.

The UN has warned of a humanitarian crisis in the region.

A spokesperson for the UN's Office for the Co-ordination of Humanitarian Affairs, Rachel Scott Leflaive, told the BBC that civilians in Ituri were fleeing the fighting, looking for a safe haven.

More than 50 civilians have been killed and an unknown number of women and girls kidnapped and raped during two months of clashes between militias from the Hema and Lendu ethnic groups, the UN says.
