Czech PM resigns over financing scandal

Czech Prime Minister Stanislav Gross, under pressure to step down over a personal financing scandal, resigned yesterday in a move expected to end a lengthy political crisis.

Gross handed in his resignation and that of his government to President Vaclav Klaus, the president's spokesman announced.

"President Vaclav Klaus today accepted the resignation of the government from Stanislav Gross," said spokesman Petr Hajek.

Just an hour earlier the Czech Republic's three ruling parties - Gross's Social Democrats (CSSD), the Christian Democrats (KDU-CSL) and the Freedom Union (US-DEU) - signed a pact to continue their coalition which had ruled since the last general election since 2002.

Gross, the European Union's youngest prime minister at 35 and also CSSD chairman, bowed to calls to step down after failing to fully explain how he had paid for his luxury Prague flat on his official salary back in 1999.
