Speakers at a workshop in Joyurhat on Thursday said all development efforts would go in vain if the desertification process in region districts can not be stopped.

Professionals, chamber leaders, educationists, and leaders of socio-cultural organisations in the district took part in the workshop, held at Joypurhat Press Club.

It was organised by the North Bengal Journalists Forum (NBJF). This was the eighth such workshop organised by NBJF as part of its programme to hold such meets in all the 16 northern districts. Earlier it held such workshops in Panchagarh, Thakurgaon, Lalmonirhat, Kurigram, Dinajpur, Rangpur and Gaibandha.

A five-member team of the NBJF led by its President MA Aziz is conducting these meetings.

The speakers also made some suggestions for balanced uniform development of the region. These include interest-free loans for entrepreneurs in northern districts for 10 years to remove poor people's sufferings during monga, power supply to all areas, setting up of export processing zones (EPZs) and ensuring fair price for agri-products.
