Students agitate for Registrar's removal

Police were called when agitated students after a procession on the campus at about 9 am on Tuesday locked the administrative building and kept the Registrar confined in his room as he did pay any heed to their complaints against two teachers. Some teachers were also confined in the administrative building during Tuesday's agitation when students also damaged equipment at classrooms for practical demonstration in the Agriculture Agriculture Extension Department (AED).

After about four hours, police rescued them by breaking the lock at the collapsible gate, sources said.

The students have been agitating since Saturday, bringing out processions on the campus.

It all started on started on Saturday after newly appointed Lecturer Faruque Hasan of AED allegedly abused some first year students at a class. The students complained to Registrar Prof. Md. Abdul Mojid, but he allegedly ignored it.

After another such incident on Sunday, student of brought out a procession on the campus demanding removal of the teachers and setting a 24-hour deadline for this. But the Registrar did not take any action.

Campus sources said that Regent Board members of HSTU Lt. Gen. (Retd) Mahbubur Rahman MP and Dr. Fakir Alamgir at its meeting about two months back had protested the appointment of teachers and staff.

Earlier, the Regent Board at its May 23 meeting had formed a three-member committee headed by Lt. Gen. (Retd) Mahbubur Rahman MP to investigate the matter.

When contacted, Mahbubur Rahman said he recently submitted the investigation report to the Chancellor of the university. He declined to elaborate.

Talking to this correspondent, the Registrar brushed aside the allegation and said, "All appointments were done fairly and as per rule".
