Protesting frequent load shedding, several thousand agitated people ransacked the 'area office' of Rural Electrification Board (REB) at Noyakandi in Karimganj upazila and set valuable equipment and documents on fire after the tarabee prayer Friday night.

Sources said, frequent load shedding had paralysed life in Karimganj. Power outage in the evening was a usual phenomenon.

The local people repeatedly appealed to the REB officials at the area office to ensure power supply at least during the tarabee prayer. But situation did not improve.

After the tarabee prayer on Friday, people from six mosques, joined by others, attacked the area office at about 9 pm. Several thousand agitated people ransacked furniture and brought out motorbikes, electric meters, weariless sets and important documents on the road, poured petrol and torched those.

Fire brigade from Kishoreganj Sadar rushed to Karimganj but all were burnt to ashes by then, said Karimganj thana Officer-in-Charge Md. Anisur Rahman.
