Fertiliser seized from smugglers
Lieutenant Shahidul Islam, Zonal Commander of Coast Guard, said they launched the drive after a tip-off that a large consignment of fertiliser was being smuggled to Mayanmar through the estuary.
They recovered the fertilisers from two cargo vessels in Banger Char area in the Meghna estuary.
However crew of the vessels managed to flee.
The recovered fertilisers were brought to Bhola Sadar and a case was lodged with police.
The Meghna estuary and coastal areas in the south and eastern region of the country have became safe routes for smuggling fertiliser, oil, cement, medicines and electronic items out of the country. Drugs and firearms are smuggled into Bangladesh from Myanmar.
