Ruling, opposition leaders feel insecure in Khulna

The south-western districts in greater Khulna are already infested with outlaws belonging to several banned left organisations.

City Awami League General Secretary Mizanur Rahman, talking to The Daily Star yesterday said, "I am feeling insecure to move freely and go to party office fearing bomb attack by so called Islamists or operatives of underground organisations".

He blamed the four-party alliance government for what he called harbouring criminals with political motive and nourishing terrorism at state level.

The AL leader alleged that sensational murder cases are not being investigated properly and neutrally due to political reason. He claimed that during Awami League rule, no leader of his party tampered with investigation of any murder or any other criminal case.

So is the observation of Khulna City BNP Secretary Nazrul Islam Manju who also blamed political influence for damaging merit of sensational murder cases. Because, he said, killers are given shelter by their political godfathers.

The BNP leader said most of the political murders were committed during Awami League regime. The present government of four-party alliance is equally responsible for its failure to contain killings and bomb attacks, Nazrul Islam Manju said. He demanded impartial investigation into all murder cases and their speedy trial.

He also stressed the need for providing security to family members of victims of political murders and appointment of neutral persons to the posts of public prosecutor for fair trial of cases which may be influenced by political leaders.

Senior officials of Khulna Metropolitan Police and district police refuted the allegation of any political influence in investigation of murder and other criminal cases. They also denied that godfathers behind political murders were left out of charge sheets in murder cases submitted so far.

"We are very much careful in dealing with murder of political leaders and journalists. We don't make haste in investigation so that the real culprits are not lest out of charg sheet, said a senior officer of KMP.
