Under-construction railway bldg collapses in Rajshahi

A portion the fourth floor roof of the under-construction main building of Tk 15 crore Rajshahi Railway Station Remodeling Project collapsed yesterday.

The construction is being done by a contractor allegedly backed by ruling BNP men.

No one was hurt when the roof collapsed with a big bang in the early hours of yesterday, Railway authorities said.

"The roof collapsed within 24 hours of its construction ", said a construction worker at the site. The rubbles were cleared soon after the incident, other sources said.

Officials of Bangladesh Railway's Western Zone and police visited the site yesterday. The sources quoted the officials as saying that the roof collapsed due to use of substandard materials and hasty work to complete the construction before the Eid.

Abdul Awal, Managing Director of SAS Constructions which is doing the jobs told newsmen that construction of the roof is yet to be completed.

"It collapsed not due to out fault. Our company will suffer a loss in the contract as prices of building materials soared by 113 percent after tendering”, he said.

The BR chief engineer was not available at the site, at office or on phone yesterday.
