Teachers to lock Dinajpur Veterinary College today

After the press conference, the 109 teachers and staff, joined by students, formed a human chain in front of Dinajpur Press Club to press their demand.

The demands include affiliation of the institution under the Hajee Danedh Science and Technology University (HSTU).

At the press conference, the teachers said future of 150 students and 109 staff of DGVC became uncertain after the development project under which the institution was set up ended on June 30 this year. Since then, the staff are not getting salary as it has not been included in government's revenue budget.

They urged the government to affiliate the institute under the HSTU by creating a new faculty. DGVC Principal AKM Abdul Ahad Biswas read out a written statement at the press conference.

They said the institute was set up at a cost of Tk 30 crore but its future has become due to alleged government indifference to it.

The then Awami League government initiated setting up of the veterinary college in 1997. Prime Minister Khaleda Zia inaugurated the college on April 23, 2003.

The DGVC authorities appealed for extension of the development project or transfer the college under government's revenue budget. In February this year, the University Grants Commission (UGC) in a letter also urged the HSTU to affiliate the DGVC under it. But those were rejected by the government, they said.
