14 hurt in clash with drug peddlers in Khulna

At least 14 people were injured in a clash between a mob and a gang of drug peddlers at Baroda Dutta lane at Shaikhpara under Sonadanga police station in the city yesterday.

Two of the injured AL Amin, 30, and Khalil, 26, were admitted to Khulna Medical College Hospital (KMCH) in a critical condition.

According to police and eye witnesses, the clash took place when large number of local residents attacked the hub of drug peddlers in a bid to stop sale of heroin and Indian Phensidyl.

Police arrested drug peddler Shahidul from the spot.

In Dolkhola area under Khulna thana, people brought out a procession yesterday in protest against release of a notorious drug trafficker from the office of Detective Branch of KMP. They demanded his re-arrest by today and threatened of tougher agitation for non-compliance.

Sources said drug lord Dalim Shaikh arrested Sunday evening was let off from DB office on the same night. Dalim was arrested with heroin in his possession.

Residents of Dolekhola area who joined protest procession further alleged that a section of plainclothes policemen regularly visit the hubs of drug traders to collect tolls. Dalim Shaikh's arrest was simply an eyewash, they said.
