A citizens committee here demanded removal of the vice-chancellor (VC) of Patuakhali Science and Technology University (PSTU), Prof Dr Wahid-uz-Zaman, on allegations of corruption.

Save the University Committee headed by BNP district unit vice president MA Rab placed the demand at a press conference held at the Barisal Reporters' Unity office on Sunday.

Prof Bahauddin Bahar, member secretary of the committee, read out a statement on behalf of the committee at the press conference. He gave a 13-page detailed account of the VC's corrupt practices. He said the VC joined PSTU in May, 2004. From the very beginning, he was involved in various corruption and violated rule.

Ignoring the university ordinance for 25 members in the highest decision making body of the university, the VC formed the body with only 13 members, the statement said. thereby making it ineffective. Although there is a provision to hold at least a meeting every three months, but only two meetings were held since its inception on February 26 in 2002, it said.

According to university ordinance, there should be a finance committee to audit income and expenditure of the university. But the committee is yet to be formed, The VC himself is handling the financial activities. And although there is a treasurer, he has not entrusted him with necessary financial power, the press statement said.

The press statement also alleged that the VC looted several crores of taka from the university fund in name of development work and other official purposes.

When contacted, VC's private secretary Asadul Huq told this correspondent from the VC's house that he would not talk to any newsman.

Earlier, several teachers, officials and employees of the university also demanded removal of the VC.
