Mirzapur industrial workers put off agitation for 15 days

The assurance came at a joint meeting of local officials, political leaders, public representatives and CBA leaders, held Monday night. The meeting was organised by Mirzapur Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Khandakar Mahmubur Rahman.

Earlier, on Saturday, the workers had announced a plan for demonstration and barricade the Dhaka-Tangail highway on Friday next (June 9) for increase of wages and other benefits.

After the agitation threat, local administration deployed additional police and kept the industrial area under special watch to avoid any untoward incident.

Monday's meeting was attended by, among others, local CBA leader and Mirzapur upazila Awami League (AL) general secretary Meer Sarif Mahmud, chairman of Gorai Union Parishad Anayet Hossen Montu and local BNP leaders Firoz Haidar Khokon, Mahbub Alam, and Abdus Sabur.

Workers' leaders of different mills and factories in the industrial area also attended in the meeting.

At the meeting, the UNO assured the industrial workers that he would arrange a meeting between them and industry owners.

Ashraf Hossain, officer-in-charge (OC) of Mirzapur Police Station, yesterday told The Daily Star that additional police will remain deployed in the industrial area.

Gorai is a big industrial area, where over 40, 000 people work in 32 small and big mills and factories.

These include Square, Newtex Group, Nahid Cotton Mills, Uttara Spinning Mill, South Famix, Masafi Biscuit Factory, Tangail Cotton Mills, Meghna Tube Factory, Tania Textile, and Meghna Group of Industries.
