Activists of ruling BNP in Gaibandha yesterday laid a siege to the offices of the deputy commissioner and the police superintendent demanding punishment the killers of Sajedur Rahman Sajid and withdrawal of the "false case" filed by Nagorik Committee against some BNP leaders.

Sajedur Rahman Sajid, 26, a medical representative from Munshipara area in the town was arrested from Katpatti near the railway station on May 18. He died in police custody on May 21 while on remand.

The BNP leaders and activists paraded the town streets chanting slogans before besieging the offices and barricading the Gaibandha-Palashbari highway for some hours.

They also held a rally, addressed by, among others, Gaibandha BNP President Hamidul Huq Chana, its secretary Kamrul Hasan Salim and other party leaders.

They demanded withdrawal of the "false case" filed by Nagorik Committee against some BNP leaders allegedly for foiling a rally of the Committee, held earlier in the town protesting the murder in custody.

They also threatened to file a case against leaders of Nagorik Committee.

Demanding punishment to killers of Sajid, several thousand children of Ahmed Uddin Shah Shisu Niketon School and College also brought out a procession in the town yesterday.

Meanwhile posters with Sajid's photo have appeared on walls in Gaibandha town demanding punishment to the killers.

The Sacheton Chattra Parisahd, a students' organisation, also declared a seven-day agitation programme yesterday for trial of the killers. It includes rally, submission of memorandum to the DC and the SP and forming human chain.

Gaibandha unit of Bangladesh Chhatra League (JSD) at a meeting demanded immediate arrest of Noor Alam, OC of Sadar thana, for his alleged involvement in the murder and of BNP cadres who attacked the Nagorik Committee rally earlier.

Today, Nagorik Committeee will hold a protest meeting of 'mothers and sisters' at the Shaheed Miner demanding punishment to the killers of Sajid.
