Women's rally demands trial of Sajid's killers

The 'rally of mothers and sisters' was part of a week-long agitation programme by Gaibandha Nagorik Committee demanding fair trial of the murder and arrest of the main accused, Sadat thana Officer-in-Charge Noor Alam.

Sajedur Raman Sajid, 26, of Munshipara under Gaibandha pourashava was arrested by police on May 18 and was placed under seven days remand. He died in custody on May 21.

Police said Sajid committed suicide but the autopsy report said he was strangled.

The murder sparked protests by different quarters including political parties, who held rallies, brought out processions and submitted memorandums. Demonstrations are being held almost every day for trial of the killers.

Thursday's rally of 'mothers and sisters' was presided over by Gaibandha Mohila Parishad President Amatun Nur Chara.

The speakers said Sajid's killers should be given exemplary punishment so that such death in custody does not take place any more.

They also demanded arrest of BNP men who attacked the peaceful meeting of Nagorik Committee earlier to protest the murder in custody.

Today, the Sacheton Chattra Parishad will form a human chain on DB Road today to press arrest and trial of killers.
