SUST teachers urge President to intervene

Students now apprehend a fresh session jam, which would greatly hamper their academic life. A number of teachers also expressed similar views while talking to this correspondent.

Meanwhile, deans and departmental heads held a meeting on Sunday with Science Faculty Dean Prof Dr. M Habibul Ahsan in the chair and discussed the situation.

The meeting observed that absence of a VC has created a lot of problems, which need to be addressed immediately.

Later, the deans and departmental heads in a memorandum submitted to the President and Chancellor of SUST stated the problems and sought his immediate intervention to appoint an 'honest, sincere and efficient person' from among SUST teachers as its VC.

The post of Treasurer was filled up recently when Prof Shamsul Huda took charge on June 3 after a long gap.

The post of pro-Vice Chancellor is still vacant.

Prof Musleh Uddin Ahmed alone was shouldering the responsibilities of VC, Pro-VC and Treasurer.

The vacuum has been created as he resigned abruptly without handing over charges to any body.

When contacted, Registrar Jamil Ahmed Chowdhury said there is a great administrative vacuum since key posts are vacant.

Academic activities can not be resumed without a Syndicate decision. Only the VC can convene a Syndicate meeting, he said.

Meanwhile, some quarters backed by the leaders of the ruling alliance are interested to bring the former VC back.

Some sources claimed that he is also trying to convince relevant quarters in the government not to accept his resignation letter so that he can return to the SUST.

However, a section of teachers and employees aligned with some opposition parties oppose the move.
