Twelve policemen including a former officer-in-charge (OC) of Gaibandha Police Station were sued in connection with alleged murder of Sajedur Rahman Sajid in custody.

Gaibandha Nagorik Committee convener Aminul Islam Golap and Sajid's elder brother Abdul Majed Sarker filed two separate cases with magistrate Ashraful Islam's court on Sunday.

The accused are former Gaibandha OC Noor Alam, SI Abu Yousuf, Arju Md Sajjad Hossain, Md Masud Rana, Farhad Hossain, SI Fahima Khatun and constables Abdul Matin, Abdul Bari, Emdadul Huq, Dulal Chandra Sarker, Ansar Ali and Mizanur Rahman.

After a hearing, the magistrate referred the cases to the Criminal Investigation Department (CID).

In his complaint, the plaintiff stated that the former OC termed Sajid's death as a suicide to protect his colleagues from murder charges. Sajid was also buried hurriedly under police escort, he said.

Sajid's father earlier lodged a complaint with Gaibandha police station on May 24. But OC Noor Alam filed a case against the lone Investigation Officer (IO) sub-inspector (SI) Abu Yousuf and arrested him on murder charge after submission of the autopsy report allegedly to divert the matter.

In face of Nagorik Committee agitation, police transferred the case to CID on June 4 but the investigation is yet to begin, sources said.
