Bangladesh women's team slumped to a 79-run defeat at the hands of former champions England in their second match of the ICC Women's World Twenty20 at the Sylhet Cricket Stadium yesterday.
The defeat, which is a record margin in a World Twenty20 match, eclipsed Ireland's 78-run defeat against Australia on Thursday.
Chasing a mammoth victory target of 138, Bangladesh lost wickets at regular intervals, eventually managing 58 for nine in their allotted 20 overs.
Vice-captain Jahanara Alam in the post-match press conference said they were trying to play their natural game, but things did not go according to plan.
"It was part of the plan to utilise the Powerplay overs and play our natural game. This is not the true picture of our ability," said Jahanara.
Choosing to bat, England amassed 137 for five, thanks to a 69-ball 80 from their inspirational skipper Charlotte Edwards. Bangladesh bowlers erred in line and length, especially after 15 overs as the runs came through all parts of the ground.
Bangladesh bats-women's lack of power was the main concern coming into this tournament and evident in their 36-run defeat against West Indies in the first match. So they tried to hit hard in the air, most of the time failing to clear the 30-yard circle and going down the fielders' throats.
Later, West Indies romped to an eight-wicket victory over Sri Lanka, thereby booking their place in the semifinals from Group 1. Stefanie Taylor scored an unbeaten 56 as West Indies reached the victory target with 30 balls to spare, after Shanel Daley's four wickets and Tremayne Smartt's three had helped them skittle Sri Lanka out for 84.
