Changing Role of Management Accountants
Management accounting is a provision of information designed to enhance the ability of management and other people within an organisation. Management accountants play significant roles in three main areas: planning, decision-making and controlling. In the late 1990s, management accountants were concerned more about decision-making and planning. But now the balance of three areas has been re-established. The change in the role is tremendously influenced by the emergence of IT sector in today's world that resulted in business growth. Application of IT in management accounting has become mainstream, as organisations can use the scope of management accounting to enhance the organisations' potentials.
Professional bodies of management accounting including Chartered Institute of Management Accountants (CIMA) stressed on IT since IT sector will influence management in better decision-making in the future.
The introduction of International Financial Report Standard (IFRS) and Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) has an important point of changing the role of management accounting. As the inclusion of new technologies in accounting systems is becoming increasingly popular and helpful for accounting, management accounting uses this to innovate collection, measurement, analysis and communication of information within the organisation.
Through these systems, management accounting can easily provide information to help manage resources, planning and controlling. Joan Luft, Professor of Accounting and Information Systems at Michigan State University, hinted at this in her lectures when she was CIMA's visiting professor in 2006. She contended that tomorrow's management accountants needed to be less of an “enabler” because that role served to “stoke the fires of over-optimism”. Luft argued that the role should instead be that of a corporate brake, which called for accountants to be neutral and pessimistic. Other reasons such as changes in regulation and legislation, corporate restructuring can also be considered as catalyst for the changing roles of management accountant.
