Higher Education Opportunity for BUFT Faculty Members in Netherlands
The launching ceremony of Netherlands Initiative for Capacity Development in Higher Education (NICHE) Project/BGD-199 on “Corporate Social Responsibility, SRHR and Innovative Leadership in the Readymade Garment Sector in Bangladesh” was held at Lakeshore Hotel, on November 10.
The vision of the project is to create more corporate social responsibility (CSR) in terms of socio-economic development and environmental protection in the RMG sector of Bangladesh to achieve international compliance. The project will provide an opportunity for the faculty members of BUFT to get higher degrees at Nyenrode Business University in Netherlands.
The ceremony was chaired by Muzaffar U. Siddique, Founder Chairman of the Trustee Board of BUFT. Md. Atiqul Islam, President, Bangladesh Garment Manufactures & Exporters Association (BGMEA) attended the function as the special guest.
The function was addressed, among others, by the Ambassador of the Netherlands, Gerben De Jong, as the Guest of Honour.

Winners of SME Proposal Contest 2014 awarded at SEU
Department of Textile Engineering of Southeast University (SEU) organised a prize giving ceremony for SME Proposal Contest-2014 at its permanent campus on November 15. Abdul Myueed Chowdhury, Former Chairperson, Bangladesh Youth Enterprise Advice and Help Center, delivered his speech as the Chief Guest. Professor Dr. Anwar Hossain, Vice Chancellor of SEU, presided over the ceremony while Professor Dr. Humayun Kabir Chowdhury, Pro-Vice Chancellor was the Special Guest. Among others, Chief Coordinator of SEU Trust, Wing Cdr. Syed Ahmed Kabir, fawc, psc (Retd), deans of different schools and chairs of different departments were present at the programme. Professor Syed Fakhrul Hassan, Dean (acting) School of Science and Engineering, gave an introduction on the programme. Later, selected students were awarded for their successful projects.

Career Day at London Grace International School
London Grace International School celebrated its Career Day on November 10. All students dressed as their desired professions and shared why they decided to pursue the careers. Students dressed at doctors, scientists, filmmakers etc. Ashraf Ibne Siddiqe, Senior Manager, Mediacom and Dr. Farhana Habib Afroz shared their experiences with the students.
Demonstration of Cutting Edge Research Techniques at IUB
The School of Life Sciences (SLS) of Independent University, Bangladesh (IUB) organised a training session on November 7-8, on the use of two state of the art equipment purchased for the Life Sciences Laboratories at the university. Hruday S. Chaporkar, an expert from Thermo/Forma Scientific from India, demonstrated applications of Real Time PCR and ELISA machines. The training was inaugurated by the Dean of SLS, Dr. Rita Yusuf. The objective was to introduce faculty members to cutting edge research protocols, enabling them to teach advanced techniques to students. SLS faculty members and representatives/technicians from the scientific companies participated in the programme.
Dr. Kamal Hossain speaks on independent judiciary at UAP
The Law Lecture Series -- by the Department of Law and Human Rights, University of Asia Pacific (UAP) -- was held at the Business Administration Department on November 10. Dr. Kamal Hossain, Senior Advocate, Supreme Court of Bangladesh delivered his lecture while Professor Jamilur Reza Choudhury, Vice Chancellor of the University, chaired the programme.
Organised by Law and Human Rights Department of UAP, convener of the function Dr. Choudhury Ishrak Ahmed Siddiky and Chairman of the department, Dr. A.N.M. Atahar Ali, spoke at the programme.
Penn State and BRAC University develop bilateral relationship
Mary-Ellen Madigan, Director of Enrollment Management, Pennsylvania State University visited BRAC University on November 13. The purpose of the visit was to develop bilateral relationship between the two universities. A discussion, on the occasion, focused on working strategies for mutual benefits through exchange programmes and resources sharing. Syed Saad Andaleeb, Vice Chancellor of BRAC University, chaired the session, along with distinguished faculty members and administrative staffs.

Bangla-English Literary Translation Workshop at ULAB
The Dhaka Translation Center (DTC) at the University of Liberal Arts Bangladesh (ULAB) began a 5-day Bangla-English Literary Translation Workshop on November 15. Professor Imran Rahman, Vice Chancellor of ULAB, inaugurated the workshop.
British Centre for Literary Translation, Commonwealth Writers and English PEN organised this workshop in partnership. Ten participants have been selected to participate in the workshop, which is being led by the award-winning Indian literary translator Arunava Sinha.
Speakers at the workshop will include Emma D'Costa of Commonwealth Writers; Fakrul Alam, Professor of English at the University of Dhaka; Kate Griffin, International Programme Director at the British Centre for Literary Translation; Khademul Islam, Editor of Bengal Lights Books and Kaisar Haq.
Participants will work on a consensus translation of a short story by Bangladeshi writer Shaheen Akhtar, who will be present during the sessions.
