Govt extends time for hilsa export to India until Nov 5

Star Business Report

The government has extended the time for hilsa fish export to India until November 5.

Earlier, Bangladesh gave go-ahead to 115 business organisations to ship 40 tonnes hilsa fish each to India as a gesture of goodwill on the occasion of Durga Puja, an annual Hindu festival held on October 11-15.

But, the companies could not send the total quantity as the government imposed a ban on netting, selling and transportation of hilsa from October 4 to 25 -- for 22 days.

So the commerce ministry extended the time today by issuing a circular.

Hilsa, the national fish of Bangladesh, is mainly exported from the Pathorghata, Bhola, Barishal, Kalapara districts of Barishal division and from Chandpur under Chattogram division.

Exporters from different parts of the country purchase the fish from these areas before shipping them abroad.
